Cookie Policy

What cookies and similar storage this site can place in your browser, what each group is for, and how to control them here or in your browser settings.

What cookies are

A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store and send back on later requests. Related technologies — local storage and session storage — hold similar information inside the browser without sending it automatically. Both are used on this site only in the ways described below. In the United Kingdom, storage of this kind is governed by the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations together with the UK GDPR: items that are strictly necessary to deliver the service may be set without consent, and everything else requires your agreement first.

Groups used on this site

We group storage into three categories. Essential storage is always active. Analytics and functional cookies are set only after you agree through the banner, and you can change or withdraw that agreement at any time.

EssentialRecords the choice you make in the cookie banner so it is not shown again on every page; supports security and correct page delivery by our hosting and content delivery provider. From the browser session up to twelve monthsNot required — strictly necessary
AnalyticsCounts page views, distinguishes first and returning visits, and reports which guides are read and in what order, so we can decide what to write next. Reports are aggregate. From the browser session up to two years, depending on the providerOnly with your consent

Managing your choices on this site

The cookie banner offers three actions. "Accept All" allows essential, analytics and functional storage. "Reject Non-Essential" allows only the essential group. "Preferences" opens a panel where you can enable analytics or functional storage separately and save that combination. Your selection is recorded in your browser, which is why the banner does not reappear on the next page. To review your decision later, clear this site's cookies and storage in your browser and the banner will be shown again on your next visit.

Rejecting non-essential storage does not limit access to any guide, image or page. Nothing on this site is placed behind a consent wall.

Controlling cookies in your browser

Every current browser lets you block or delete cookies, either for all sites or for individual ones, and most offer a setting for third-party cookies specifically. The controls are usually found under Privacy and Security in the browser's settings menu:

  • Google Chrome — Settings, then Privacy and security, then Third-party cookies and Site settings.
  • Mozilla Firefox — Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Cookies and Site Data.
  • Apple Safari — Settings or Preferences, then Privacy, with per-site controls under Manage Website Data.
  • Microsoft Edge — Settings, then Cookies and site permissions.

Browsers also provide a private or incognito mode, which discards cookies and storage when the window closes. Blocking all cookies globally will affect many other websites, including ones that need them to sign you in or hold a basket.

Cookies set by others

We do not carry third-party advertising, advertising networks or social media tracking pixels on this site. Where analytics cookies are active with your consent, they are set by our analytics provider acting as our processor under a written agreement, and the resulting reports are aggregate rather than individual. Our hosting and content delivery provider may set strictly necessary items to route requests and protect the site.

Changes and contact

If we introduce a new cookie or change the purpose of an existing one, this page will be updated and, where consent is required, the banner will ask again before the new item is set. Questions about this policy, or about the data handled through it, go to [email protected], or by post to Turnstile & Terrace Publishing Ltd, Second Floor, Marlbeck House, 14 Carding Row, Ancoats, Manchester, M4 6QF, United Kingdom. Our Privacy Policy explains the wider handling of personal data, including retention periods and your rights.
